Is There A Past Experience That Keeps You From Moving On In Life?

Trauma and Abuse - Healing Paths CounselingDo you think you might be struggling with trauma? Does it seem like your mind is always reliving painful memories from your past? Maybe you have nightmares or intrusive thoughts because you’re constantly thinking about what happened to you. Perhaps you have a constant feeling that something terrible will happen again, which prevents you from focusing on the present. Or maybe your troubles are more subtle—you feel numb inside, detached from everything around you, like you’re living in a dream.

When you’re dealing with trauma, it can affect every area of your life—your mood, your job, your relationships, and even your sleep habits. You could be suffering from symptoms of PTSD, such as flashbacks or dissociative episodes. Or maybe you find yourself unable to control your emotions, constantly lashing out or having outbursts of anger or sadness. If you’re religious, you may ask yourself: Why would God let this happen to me? What did I do to deserve this kind of life?

In the end, living with trauma is not just debilitating—it’s lonely. If you’ve suffered from sexual abuse, for instance, you may have a fear of intimacy with others. Although you want stronger relationships, you might end up pushing people away for fear of getting hurt again.

In order to process and resolve painful memories, though, it’s essential to seek help. With my support, I believe you can work through your fears and move forward with peace and assurance.

Most People’s Trauma Flies Under The Radar And Goes Unacknowledged

Many of us live with severe emotional pain without understanding that it relates to trauma. Not all trauma is easy to spot—grief and loss, child neglect, and growing up with verbally or emotionally abusive parents are all examples that fly under the radar. And when we don’t believe that our experience was actually traumatic, we will often try to minimize what happened by saying “it wasn’t that bad” or “it happened a long time ago.”

What’s more, we live in a culture where we are often pressured to solve all our problems alone. There is a stigma around seeking help. Although there is more awareness around trauma than there has ever been, many of us still fear coming forward about our struggles. We often internalize our troubles and come to believe that, because we can’t overcome trauma alone, something is wrong with us.

Because trauma can be so isolating to deal with, however, it isn’t always possible to heal alone. By working with me, you can learn to transform the limiting patterns in your life and find relief from your trauma.

Trauma Therapy Can Help You Resolve Painful Memories And Experience Peace Of Mind

Trauma and Abuse - Healing Paths CounselingIf you’ve suffered from trauma, merely talking about your traumatic experience can be stressful. Thankfully, my sessions provide a safe, controlled environment where you can discuss your troubles in a way that does not re-traumatize you. My approach is gentle, compassionate, and seeks to help you develop a trusting, loving relationship with yourself. I have decades of experience helping people process, resolve, and heal from trauma. I believe I can do the same for you.

In the beginning, we will meet for an intake session to assess your needs and develop a treatment plan together. From there, my goal is to help you understand how trauma is holding you back. Together, we will identify limiting patterns in your life and explore new possibilities for coping and de-stressing. We will also address any negative beliefs spawned by your struggles. It’s important to know that you are not broken or damaged—the pain you feel exists simply because your trauma has not been resolved. And it is possible to find healing, no matter how hopeless you may feel.

To help you resolve your trauma symptoms, I typically use a research-based, scientifically-supported approach called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. It basically works like this: when you have a traumatic experience, it gets stored in the neural pathways on one side of the brain. If you do talk therapy or read self-help books, the information you learn gets stored on the opposite side. The goal of EMDR treatment is to stimulate the two sides of your brain, left and right, so that you can fully and completely process your trauma. The approach uses a series of gentle, relaxing stimulation techniques—such as holding pulsers in your hand—to remove the painful feelings and sensations that come with traumatic memories. If you suffered from sexual abuse, for instance, EMDR therapy will desensitize the emotional impact that the experience has on your life.

Through EMDR and the rest of our work in trauma therapy, you can find healing in your mind, body, spirit, and relationships. My hope for our time together is that your trauma will no longer control your life—you will. And instead of trauma holding you back, I want you to experience a joyful, empowered and fulfilling life.

Let me reassure you: you are not broken or damaged because of your past. I encourage you to be kind to yourself. Trauma is hard for anyone, no matter how resilient or intelligent you are. My sessions are 100% confidential. This is a space where you can say whatever is on your mind with no reservations. If there are things from your past that you’ve never told anyone about, you are more than welcome to share them here.
