Are You Having Doubts About Your Faith?

Christian Counseling - Healing Paths CounselingDo you want to delve deeper into your spirituality, but you’re afraid to? Maybe you’re not a Christian, but there are existential questions about life and the universe you’d still like to explore. Or perhaps you are a believer, but you’re having doubts about your faith.

Maybe you’re going through a time of profound suffering, and you feel like God has abandoned you. You may have suffered harm or abuse at the hands of someone in your church, and the experience has left your faith shaken. In the face of all your struggles, perhaps you ask yourself: What is the meaning of my suffering? How could a loving God allow such things to happen?

Questioning your most deeply-held beliefs can affect every area of your life, from your sleep to your work to your eating habits. What’s more, it can even lead to conflict in your relationships. Maybe your partner or family member is judging you for wrestling with your faith. In today’s culture, where the political divide has become more and more polarizing, questions of religion and politics have led to fractured relationships among family members. Perhaps your partner or spouse has political views at odds with what their faith professes, and it’s led to tension between you.

At the moment, you may feel that your faith has let you down. Your struggles may have led to depression, anxiety, extreme mood swings, and other emotional issues. Thankfully, with my warm, compassionate approach to Christian counseling, I can help you maintain peace of mind in this season of doubt. Whether you are religious or not, I am interested in helping you explore life’s big questions on your own terms.

In Today’s World, Many People Are Straddling The Line Between Faith And Doubt

Virtually everyone has wrestled with their faith, whether they admit it or not. Oftentimes, spiritual issues arise because of emotional, physical, sexual, or religious trauma. In addition to suffering abuse from a church leader, many people come from churches that encouraged them not to doubt their faith. As a result, they feel guilty and ashamed whenever they question it, leading to low self-esteem and feelings of self-hatred.

In America today, the faith community has hit a crossroads. More and more people—especially those who profess Christianity—have come to believe in conspiracy theories and hold onto radical political ideas. This has torn families and friendships apart and contributed to the growing social unrest. Many believers are straddling the thin between faith and doubt as they try to make sense of a world where it isn’t always clear who the real Christians are.

Maybe that’s how you’re feeling—like you’re trying to find peace in the midst of cultural and spiritual warfare. If so, I would be honored to help you. Christian counseling is a time to voice your frustrations, heal from trauma, and explore your spirituality on a deeper level.

Christian Counseling Is A Chance To Think Out Loud About Your Faith And Your Purpose

Christian Counseling - Healing Paths CounselingYou may have come from a religious background where it wasn’t okay to talk about your doubts. That is not the case here. With me, you have a chance to think out loud about your faith and express your struggles openly. I am a graduate of Denver Seminary and have decades of experience helping people make peace with their doubts. I am confident that I can do the same for you.

At the same time, it’s important to know that I’m not going to try and tell you what to believe. You don’t have to be a Christian to benefit from therapy. The healing process happens on your terms, not mine. My goal is simply to walk with you on your journey and help you come up with your own skills and solutions. I want to engage your heart, mind, body, and spirit as we journey together, helping you find peace in every aspect of your being.

In sessions together, we will explore your sense of meaning and purpose and how your experiences have affected it. There may be suffering in your life that seems impossible to square with your spiritual beliefs. Perhaps you have suffered from domestic violence, childhood abuse, postpartum depression, grief and loss, or cult abuse. I want to help you make sense of your trauma in the light of what you think about God and your purpose in life.

Since I am a trauma-informed therapist, one of my core approaches is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. At its core, the goal of EMDR is to ease the emotional impact of trauma, whether it is spiritual, sexual, physical, or emotional in nature. EMDR enables you to confront traumatic memories in a safe, controlled manner. It can free you from the bonds of anxiety and depression and help you achieve peace in both your mind and body.

Additionally, I often draw inspiration from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This approach looks at the correlation between what you believe about yourself and how that affects your feelings and behavior. For instance, there may have been false teachings your church told you that led to harmful patterns in your life. If there was an unhealthy emphasis on guilt, you may struggle with feelings of shame or self-loathing. CBT will help you uncover these unhealthy beliefs and replace them with beliefs that are enriching and life-affirming.

As we journey together, it’s important that you’re kind to yourself. In the wake of profound suffering and trauma, it’s perfectly normal to flounder in your faith. The very people who were supposed to protect you and nurture your soul may have hurt you or let you down, causing you to question everything (and everyone) you ever believed. That’s why I want to be someone you can lean on. No matter how alone you feel, hope alleviates darkness, and I am confident that you can emerge from this season of doubt stronger in mind, body, and spirit.

You may have some questions about Christian counseling…

Why am I constantly worried if I believe in God? +

Believing in God may give you hope, but it does not make you immune to anxiety. Thankfully, CBT can help you control negative thoughts and self-beliefs and prevent them from causing anxiety. This approach will give you the strength to control what you can control and let go of what you can’t. It’s normal to flounder in your faith, and CBT will help you make peace with your doubts about faith.

Why would God allow such terrible things to happen in my life? +

Why suffering exists in a universe that a loving God created is one of the deepest, most perplexing questions anyone can ask. There is no easy answer, but there is a safe, compassionate, and fulfilling way to explore the question. In Christian therapy, you and I will explore the meaning of suffering in your life and help you craft a deeper sense of purpose in light of it.

I continually make bad choices and engage in harmful behaviors. Can Christian counseling help me? +

When you’ve experienced trauma in your life, you may develop coping mechanisms that do more harm than good. For instance, if you experienced abuse in a relationship, you may find yourself pushing people away because you’re afraid of getting hurt again. While doing so can prevent short-term stress, it can also make you lonely. In Christian counseling, my goal is to help you reevaluate your coping skills and come up with strategies that enrich your relationships and mental health.
